Marsha, the Founder of Cater to Mom, on Postpartum Challenges

Welcome to Behind the Box, our interview series to introduce you to exciting sellers on the Cratejoy Marketplace! Each of these small businesses has a unique, important story to tell, and we’re eager to help spread the word.

This month, we’re shining a light on Black entrepreneurs, creators, and sellers in the Cratejoy community, each with their own important stories and passions. Today, we sat down with Marsha, the founder of thoughtful subscription for new moms Cater to Mom! Learn more about what inspired Marsha to launch Cater to Mom below.

Tell us your story! What inspired you to launch your box?

I started my career in the military, and after my completion of service, I went back to school and pursued my degree in Human Resource Management. I am a mom of two, and with both my children, I had postpartum depression and a very difficult postpartum recovery. I remember with both the pregnancies, I was given so many resources on what to expect during my pregnancy and how to prepare for my baby's arrival, but nothing in regards to postpartum. I truly was not prepared for the challenges that came with postpartum and I was so afraid to talk to anyone about my feelings for fear of being judged. I suffered in silence.

No mom should have to feel alone in their postpartum journey. I started Cater to Mom to help moms be better informed about maternal mental health and help them be better prepared for postpartum care. Through partnerships with other mompreneurs who believe in supporting moms postpartum, I would like to think Cater to Mom is essentially a mom support community all wrapped up in a beautiful gift box.

Why this subscription box -- and why now?

Women of every culture, age, income level, and race can develop perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Symptoms can appear at any time during pregnancy and within the first 12 months after childbirth. It is often one of the most challenging times for new moms, especially if it is the first baby. Strangely, we are given all the tools and resources to take care of our babies, but very little to nothing at all to better prepare us for postpartum. Where is the book about What to Expect Postpartum?

Cater to Mom is filling this need by raising awareness of perinatal mental health. We provide monthly postpartum boxes curated to support moms postpartum and beyond. But most importantly, we are ensuring postpartum resources are included in our boxes, so Mom is better prepared for her postpartum journey.

What makes Cater to Mom unique?

We are the first postpartum subscription box that focuses on catering to the needs of moms after they have given birth. Our boxes are themed based on different challenges moms face during postpartum such as sleep deprivation, breastfeeding, nutrition, postpartum recovery, self-development, maternal mental health, [and more]. We also include tons of resources from trusted health professionals to further educate moms on postpartum care.

Our goal is to create awareness and educate moms on the resources that are available to them. I think that what makes Cater to Mom stands out from other boxes.

Anything else you’d like readers to know?

I am just a mom on a mission to bring back the fourth trimester. I think in so many ways I can relate to so many moms… I have been there. Each box I curate is touched with love, light, and positive energy with the intention to uplift Mom when she opens her Cater to Mom box.
