Tell us your story! What inspired you to launch your box?
Three years ago, I became acutely aware of the plastic waste problem. I was overwhelmed and didn't know where to start. I'd research products, but analysis paralysis would kick in and I'd implement almost nothing.
I decided to look for a solution that would make it simpler and help me implement. When I couldn't find it, I knew I needed to build it and share it. So the idea of greenUP box was formed!
Each box is curated around one major life theme to help reduce plastic waste in one area of our lives at a time. This reduced the overwhelm, decision fatigue, and not knowing where to start.
I'm also the Executive Director of an education abroad non-profit. My professional life has been dedicated to helping college students become global citizens. My own experiences abroad shaped my understanding of the interconnectedness of all humans and our planet.
I had the technical background to launch and run a company and the deep understanding of how our actions impact each other. Coupled with my awareness of the plastic waste problem, I knew we could together make a huge impact through small but consistent actions, and greenUP Box was founded.
Why this subscription box –– and why now?
Every piece of plastic every created still exists. There are 46,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile of the ocean. We all need to do our part to reduce plastic, [and] greenUP box makes it simpler and more affordable to reduce your plastic waste.
What does success look like to you?
Success is growing awareness about the plastic problem and giving people the best possible solution that's available –– greenUP Box.
What makes greenUP Box unique?
We are the first subscription box dedicated to reducing plastic. We curate the boxes around a theme to make it easier to build habits and reduce plastic in one area of your life at a time. For example, the kitchen, the bathroom, or grocery shopping. We're using the latest psychology research on habit forming to help our subscribers build plastic-reducing habits that will last.
Tell us about your theme and product curation for each box. How do you decide what goes into the box for your customers? Where do you source your products from?
We curate our boxes themes around major life areas, such as The Work Day or The Kitchen or The Clean Home. Each box contains essentials to reduce plastic plus one item that's more fun and inspirational.
We source products from brands and companies in the U.S. and sometimes globally. We aim to work with small, family-run companies.
What are some things about you that you’d like readers to know?
I created this box to solve my struggles with reducing plastic waste. I understand what it's like to want to make an impact and feel completely overwhelmed [about] where to start or see how one person could possibly make a difference. I would get excited about change, but soon burn out with all of the research and work involved. My goal with greenUP box was to take that work on and make it simpler and more fun for others to reduce their plastic footprint.
