Behind the Box: Habitation Box

Welcome to Behind the Box, our interview series to introduce you to exciting sellers on the Cratejoy Marketplace! Each of these small businesses has a unique, important story to tell, and we’re eager to help spread the word.

Today, we sat down with Kelly, the founder of Habitation Box!

Habitation Box's expert home decor subscription launched earlier this year, and we couldn't be happier about it! Learn more about what inspired Kelly, an experienced interior designer turned entrepreneur, to start her business below.

Tell us your story! What inspired you to launch your box?

Prior to college, I was dead set on what I wanted to do. I wanted to be an interior designer. I wanted to be on job sites, going to client meetings, helping people achieve their goals/dreams for their home. I wanted to do good in the world and make a difference! Cliché, right? So I applied to Design Institute of San Diego and was accepted.

Post-graduation, I landed a full-time job! How exciting: I was 22 [and] working 40-45 hours a week! I felt independent and successful.

The reality of what my life became, [however,] was not how I envisioned living my life. I was stuck at a desk day in and day out. I battled my inner creativity and beat down my inner spirit day after day after day. Every day when I got home from work, I felt so mentally broken down and dissatisfied with what my life had become. I gained 15 pounds in one year and I started to rely on drinking... My emotions grew out of control, and I began to realize I was creating a very unhealthy lifestyle. A lifestyle I did not want, nor liked.

I started thinking, with my countless hours of free time at work, what can I do? What should I do? What do I want to do?!

[So] on January 15th, I took the plunge! I quit my job and decided I am going to just figure myself out.

Since quitting my job, [some things] have also been difficult. I have done a lot of soul-searching and I have had a lot of time to contemplate the way I envisioned living my life. I knew one thing was certain, I wanted to be free. Free from waking up at 6:30 every day, free to work when I want to, and free to let my creativity control my career.

One night I figured out a way to achieve all that I have ever dreamed of.

My answer is Habitation Box.

Habitation Box is a monthly subscription box that brings stylish and artisanal home decor and accessories right to your door. Habitation Box places a high value on artisanal products, focuses on the ethical resourcing of each product that is featured, and only sources high-quality materials. We strive to make each box fit into everyone's home. We succeed at this by focusing on neutral colors and items that provide you with functional value and is still aesthetically pleasing.

Tell us about your themes and curation for each box. How do you decide what goes into the box for your customers, and where do you find your products?

I source from small businesses, large businesses, USA-owned, and woman-owned. [In terms of theme,] I am influenced by seasonal and monthly holidays.

What makes Habitation Box unique?

My box is unique because I have a degree in interior design. I am able to use my expertise in design to curate a box that is timeless.
