This month, we’re shining a light on Black entrepreneurs, creators, and sellers in the Cratejoy community, each with their own important stories and passions. Today, we sat down with Brittel, the founder of Magic Mom’s Celebration Kit, a unique T-shirt and craft subscription box to celebrate holidays with the whole family! Learn more about what inspired Brittel to launch Magic Mom below.

Tell us your story! What inspired you to launch your box?

Hi! My name is Brittel, owner of Magic Mom and mom of a 3-year-old son and 9-month-old daughter.

Here’s a fun story on the making of Magic Mom. In early March, the first week that I returned from maternity leave with my daughter, things were hectic. Like most working moms, I was completely overwhelmed with balancing corporate life, motherhood, and home. After a late day at work, I rushed into my kid’s daycares to pick them up when my son’s teacher said, “Don’t forget that it’s Dr. Seuss Week this week. Make sure he’s in his shirt tomorrow and his St. Patrick’s Day shirt next week.” I couldn’t believe it; I totally forgot to buy his Dr. Seuss shirt, just like I forgot his St. Patrick’s Day shirt. I thought, I wish someone would just send me everything that I need for every holiday each month, so that I could spend less time “prepping” for special occasions and more time enjoying them with my kids.

The next week, the pandemic happened. Suddenly I was a mom, daycare teacher, and a corporate marketing manager [working from home] all at the same time. To top things off, my son’s third birthday party was planned for the next weekend.

At the last minute, we had to cancel his birthday party and opted for a small, at-home celebration instead. My husband and I decorated the house, made fun birthday T-shirts, and did crafts and activities throughout the weekend. It was a hit! He had such a blast that for four weekends straight, he asked if we could “do my birthday again.”

That’s when it hit me… I didn’t want to wait a full 12 months to make him feel special or to create those celebratory moments with our family. And I wanted to find a way to make creating those moments easier for busy moms like me.

Magic Mom was created to help parents create regular memories that toddlers and preschoolers are sure to remember. We combine the seasonal moments of the holidays with teachable activity kits and decor to create purposeful family time that kids are sure to love.

Why this subscription box –– and why now?

Parents are busier now than they’ve ever been. They’re balancing the demands of work, parenting, and home all at once and likely in the same place. After many months of staying at home, it’s natural for routines, lessons, and activities to get stale.

Magic Mom’s Celebration Kit gives parents new ways to create celebratory moments for their kids each month. And unlike many boxes, our kit comes at a great value with T-shirts, crafts, and decor included, and enough crafts/materials for multiple kids.

How do you decide what goes into the box for your customers? Where do you source your products from?

Each box is seasonally relevant for upcoming holidays or occasions. We source from multiple domestic wholesalers with the intent to curate crafts, T-shirts, and decor that are toddler- and preschooler-friendly. Products are sampled with a test group before being confirmed for future kit placements to ensure relevance.

I am an African American mother of two who understands the importance of balance and appreciates the gift of time. Like many moms, I’ve navigated the waters of corporate America and I am working to build a life that can allow me to continue to feel fulfilled as a businesswoman while creating more time for the things, and people, that matter the most.
