Saloon Box Review + Unboxing | February 2019

What is SaloonBox DIY Cocktail Kit?

SaloonBox is a monthly subscription box that delivers unique cocktails right to your front door - alcohol included. What’s great about this service is not only the fun recipes, but the variety and history of liquor you are exposed to. You’ll get something from Mexico one month, then Canada the next, providing you with the knowledge you need to impress any snobby guest you’d like.

This month, SaloonBox was inspired by the romance of Valentine’s Day, which means subscribers are in a for a treat. The three main mixers for February are gin, champagne (bubbles are so romantic, no?), and mezcal, a unique and uncommon form of Mexican liquor that is similar to tequila.

SaloonBox contents

Without getting too nerdy into the technicalities of liquor, if you like tequila, you should really like mezcal. They are similar but not quite the same and should pair well with a lot of the same ingredients.

How Much Does SaloonBox Cost?

Considering the cost of alcohol, it’s easy to assume that SaloonBox might be too expensive to order. Admittedly, it is a little on the pricier side for a modest budget - $50/ box - however, considering you don’t have to actually go out and buy a separate bottle of whatever flavor-of-the-month you are trying, the price is great.

Packaging and Unboxing

Typically, each SaloonBox's has 2 recipes and all the ingredients you need to make up to 4 drinks, although sometimes you can make up to 8 depending on the bottle sizes and how heavy-handed you get with the recipes.

The shipping is pretty quick, however, since the alcohol is delivered directly, you will need an adult to sign for the package. For me, that meant having it delivered to the club house, since I work a full time job and no one was home to sign for it.

As for the box, I absolutely loved the design and look. It definitely fit the style and vibe of the company. There was a high quality envelope with recipe cards and a letter explaining the monthly theme.

Within the box was the champagne, which was wrapped separately in bubble wrap, and a smaller box with all the items for mixing. It’s a little messy as far as packing material, so be sure to take your time so you don’t have stuffing all over your floor.

SaloonBox recipe cards

As for the drinks themselves, we’ll get to that below.

February SaloonBox Items

SaloonBox ingredients

Recipe 1: Cinnamon Mezcal Margarita Recipe

2 Bottles of Gem & Bolt Mezcal
1 Can of Ocean Spray Grapefruit juice
2 Packs of Honey
1 Packet of Cinnamon
Not Included: 1 fresh lime

This is such a lovely recipe, and a great alternative for those store-bought mixers. A little stronger than a typical margarita (at least, mine is), but it’s fantastic and I will probably make this again. No, I will definitely make it again.

Recipe 2: Owlish 75

1 Bottle of Tanqueray Gin
1 Bottle of Sparkling Wine
1 Bottle of Owl’s Brew Strawberry Manhattan
Not Included: 1 fresh lemon

Delish! You will love the bubbles, the hint of lemon and the taste of the strawberry manhattan mix. I had this on a Sunday afternoon, instead of a mimosa, and it was perfect.
