This was so much fun! I just got the first box of On the Run (there will be 7 boxes total it says) and I loved how much stuff I could discover online about the characters and this world it’s set in. There is a mini mystery for each box and they tell you what needs to happen for you to consider the box solved so I felt like I accomplished something with it even though there’s more to the story. I can’t wait for the next box!
"Thanks for the review, Elizabeth! We're thrilled that you're becoming immersed in the mystery!"
A subscription that you can trust, customer service is a gem.
Tina, thank you so much for your review! We're thrilled you've enjoyed the entire Dispatch experience!
I got this for myself (47), my husband (64) and our adult son (19). I really like it but my husband and son do not like it. I am still giving them 5 stars, though, because they have EXCELLENT customer service, the materials that come in the box are of very high quality and very immersive, and I since bought this and I, personally liked it. Hubby and son did not like the fact that it can be text heavy and relies on researching stuff online. You have to want the story line that goes along with your puzzles! They wound up waiting for me to look stuff up online and therefore became bored. I happened to like that part of it. They have done an amazing job creating the online components to go along with the box. The really nice thing is that they have one series that is only 2 boxes, so you could try that to see if you like it, and once you are hooked, you can move on to one of the longer series, which is what I've done. Oh, they also have a really great online group for when you get stuck on a puzzle or whatever. The hardest part is waiting a whole month for the next box.
Thanks so much for your review! You bring up a ton of great points about our product. If the rest of your family are more interested in physical clues and less interested in the text portion, the 'On the Run' series is the most text (story) heavy so maybe they'll join in on other series! Thanks again for your review!
This is done very well. I am ready to open box three. The story line in this series is excellent. I am impressed by the cleverness of folks who can create such an involved interactive, totally fun experience.
Anyone liking Hunt a Killer and Empty Faces, will also like this.
"Thanks so much for your review, Cathy! We're thrilled you've joined the adventure."
This is such a good idea but not for the cost. The nicest part was a wedding invite and the rest was just paper stuff. I have thinking it might be a fun date night activity but it's way over priced in my opinion. If it was a printable pdf for 1/3 of the cost I would have been much happier.
Crystal, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I can definitely see where you are coming from when talking about our first box. This box is meant to set the stage of the story, therefore requires a lot more text material than our other boxes. In the later installments, we make sure to include several physical clues that are very engaging and fun.
It’s really cool. Just way too expensive.
Madelyn, thanks for sharing your thoughts! We want to keep the immersive experience of Dispatch by including high-quality clues and materials. This has an effect on the price of each box. I've done mystery/puzzle boxes from four different companies in the last six months, and the series from Dispatch was hands-down my favorite.
I've done one brand with my spouse, a more educational one with my two teenagers, and we did a third brand as a family-game-night type thing. They were all fun, but there was always at least one puzzle that felt a little bit arbitrary or obscure. You know that thing that happens when you finally give in and check the hints page, and then say, "Oh! Well that's dumb." No part of the Dispatch series I did felt that way at all.
The puzzles were very well crafted, the story was interesting, and the individual components (right down to the websites) were top-notch. I decided to give Dispatch a try because I'm a big ol' nerd about these kinds of things, and I read that it was among the most challenging puzzles out there. I was looking specifically for something that I could do over Skype with my equally nerdy friend in another city, so I took the plunge and bought two copies of "I, Spy" and had one shipped to him and the other to myself. It was worth every penny, we both had a great time, and I'm ordering "The Disappearing Magician" right now as a follow-up.
Specific things we both appreciated:
- This box does not hold your hand at all. Maybe it's because we went straight to one of the "advanced" boxed sets,...
I've been scouring the internet for a "solve a mystery" subscription box for quite some time. I've tried a few in the past that were either too expensive for what they offered, had poor writing, no direction, or poor quality facsimiles. I decided to take a chance on this subscription and I'm very happy I did! As far as the price goes, it's one of the cheapest boxes in its category and the various included ephemera are some of the best-produced ones I've seen. Newspaper clippings look like actual newspaper clippings, complete with cutoff articles and ads on the opposite side. I really appreciate this kind of detail and quality. It makes the mystery and the story feel more authentic. Some of the puzzles are quite challenging while others are a breeze. Either way, you feel a sense of accomplishment after finishing each box and as you await the next installment. All of Dispatch's stories differ in length, so if you want to test the waters there are shorter storylines you can start with. 'On the Run' (my favorite) is 7 boxes long, while 'The Cat's Eye' is only 2 boxes, and 'I, Spy' has 5. There are also options to purchase all the boxes in a storyline at once, which is great for impatient people such as me. If you are searching for a quality mystery adventure and don't want to kill your wallet, I would give this subscription a shot. Their newest series is entitled "The Disappearing Magician"...
Thanks so much for the review, Jessica! We're thrilled you're enjoying the adventure.
Tried Marlowe's cat mystery box with a coupon from the website and it was great family time this last weekend. Packaging is very interesting and puzzles are very clever. We will be working on the mystery as we have time together and it will be a blast to see how thr story turns out. If you like mystery/detective boxes, this one is great fun.
We have been getting each box monthly basically since they started. Every box we have gotten has been great. It makes everything feel real with the well designed websites and all the clues inside the box look amazing. Most boxes can take a while so it can be fun to do them with a group. Also each story line is more than one box long so every clue you solve feels very important. Also if you're like us and cannot figure out a clue you can go to the slack Chanel to get help from others with the same box. It is a great experience at an amazing price.
Thank you so much for your review! We're thrilled that you've enjoyed the adventure!
I am addicted to these games so I've tried quite a few and Dispatch is one of my favorites! The stories are interesting and very engaging, the clues and props are clever and really well done, the puzzles are challenging but not impossible, plus you can easily get help if you do get stuck. Their pricing is very reasonable, especially compared to some other companies who don't provide the same level of quality that Dispatch does! I also like that you can put your subscription on hold for up to 3 months and then start up again right where you left off. That's very helpful when the unexpected occurs and you're strapped for cash. Dispatch is a lot of fun and I highly recommend it!
Irene, thank you so much for your in depth review! We are THRILLED that you love Dispatch! We appreciate your support and kind words :)
