Q: This is a gift. can 1st box be sent to me in time for Christmas and then rest sent to them at different address?Asked by Gina A., December 2019
Were you able to have this done? I am curious as I am giving as a Christmas gift
Yes, that can be done. You would just need to contact us via email and we can set that up for you.
Q: Is this something that would be good for a group of 4-6 people? Not sure if it is better for just 2 people or can be adapted for a larger group. Asked by Megan H., May 2019
4 to 6 people could do it... Sometimes there is a bit of up front reading involved. We take turns reading / overacting those parts out loud (as well as the final solution) which is super fun... Then everyone could work on one of the many puzzles and report their findings to the group....
Buy one and try it!
I think 2-3 is best since you are reading from a device (laptop or tablet). We have had more people and then used 2 devices.
A group of 4-6 people could definitely do this. We have quite a few people who have monthly mystery dinners and enjoy good food and company while solving our mysteries.
We have done it with 3 and 4 people. I think more than 4 may be too many especially if everyone wants to be really involved. 3 was a great number, it also depends a little on the box and the skill level of who you are working with.
4-6 people could play just fine as most of the mysteries aren't linear.
I think you could do it with more than 2 people or a group. You could assign certain people to different puzzles (tasks, etc.). You may want to make copies of everything for all that are playing
Q: The description reads "some Internet access required via smartphone or tablet". Can it be accessed through a laptop? Also, is this something that one person can do on their own?Asked by Laura W., November 2019
As some other people have answered, there are QR codes that must be scanned. Once scanned they have you download a file or sometimes redirect to YouTube. Recently they had us send an email to a specific address that provided some answers and more clues.
And yes this is totally doable on your own.
We like to use an iPad (tablet). You can even use a phone (or two).
There are QR code’s that need to be scanned to follow a link. It wouldn’t work with a laptop I don’t believe. You could solve it as one person if you wanted to.
This is definitely something one person can do on their own. A laptop could be used as long as it has a camera and the ability to scan and read QR codes.
Q: Does each mystery box build on the last, or are there new mysteries every time?Asked by Michelle J., April 2019
Each box is it's own self-contained mystery, requiring no knowledge of prior boxes. However, there are some very minor references and easter eggs that are fun for people who have done multiple boxes (and they are so minor that you miss nothing if you don't even get them). Again, no knowledge of prior boxes is needed. Each stands alone. That was a big concern for me, too, when I was deciding on what box to subscribe to, so I understand...
Each of our boxes are stand-alone mysteries. They all take place within the same universe so you will see characters or locations appear in multiple boxes. But they are not written where you have to solve one box before solving another.
No, each month is different.
Each box is a brand-new mystery.
WOW! Simply wow! We LOVED this. What an awesome date night game! Perfectly put together, lasted a couple of hours. We were NEVER bored and guessing until the very end. We ordered Sanitarium as a trial and we are for sure going to be monthly subscribers! Thanks for the fun!
That's awesome! We love hearing about quality date night time. Thank you for the review and for being a subscriber! I am sure Nurse Edgarton would be appreciative of your efforts :-)
If you're here reading this then you, like I was, are probably trying to sort out which subscription mystery box to sign up for among the many ones out there. I did the research you are most likely doing now and I settled on Deadbolt Mystery and I am glad I did. Deadbolt was everything I was looking for. Hopefully, my comments here will help you with your decision.
I've done three of their boxes so far (WANTED, COPYCAT, and INFECTED), so I thought I have seen enough of their content to have an informed review. I am doing their monthly subscription box. I have not ordered any of the one-off specialty boxes.
It's not that helpful to just say I love the box. Because you need to know what I was looking for. Let me explain that a bit.
I wanted something cooperative, of moderate difficulty (not too hard, not too easy), self-contained, professionally done with quality components, good writing, not a lot of hand-holding, and I wanted a mystery more than an escape room vibe. DMS delivered on all of those. And on top of that they are really professional, have a great online community and their shipping is timely and like clockwork. No waiting for boxes, they run like a well-oiled machine.
My brother and I are older now and live in different states. We both love puzzles and we wanted a fun way to keep in touch each month. We had tried Mysterious Package Company and...
Thanks a million for your detailed review of The Deadbolt Mystery Society! We do our best to create intriguing stories and challenging puzzles with each of our subscription boxes. We are glad you are enjoying them and appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences!
Just figured I would drop by and give my praise (Easthaven Forest Box). My wife and I cracked into our first box of many last night and were both glad we did. With four kids and busy work schedules date nights are impossible, so this was our way of having one. Upon opening the box and laying out the contents we thought it would be to challenging but after beginning and finding our first clues and linking together puzzles we were both smiling big and high fiving. We were not able to complete it in one sitting of course but we had a blast and can not wait to figure out who is the murderer. So thank you for taking my wife and I on a much needed date. I personally can not wait for more now that we have a date night activity!
We are so happy you chose to spend date night with the Deadbolt Mystery Society! Sending smiles and high fives back at you helping the Will Street Detective Agency bring justice to Valley Falls! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience Clifford!
DMS is easily the best mystery box subscription. We have tried several and settled with DMS as our favorite. We have completed 6 (and have several more to go). Each box has been well crafted and challenging. You can tell this Company care about their product and customers. Try a box today, you won't be disappointed.
Awesome review, Sean! We really do care a lot about story lines as well as the box contents but even more so about our customer experiences. Thank you for taking the time to share yours!
I can’t say enough about how much I love the deadbolt mystery boxes! My sister bought me 3 of them for my birthday last year. I ended up buying myself three more boxes as well as a subscription. Fun for the family, with friends, or even to do on your own. No regrets with these at all!! Looking forward to more boxes in the future.
Thank your sister for us for getting you hooked on our mystery boxes! So glad to hear you are enjoying them. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on The Deadbolt Mystery Society. We really appreciate it!
I was first introduced to the Deadbolt Mystery Society during a murder mystery night at my local library. After a few months of doing the monthly boxes at the library I began buying all the previous boxes available. They make great date nights with my husband or a fun night with friends. I have subscribed to other murder mystery boxes, but Deadbolt is by far the best in quality and price.
Mystery night at the library sounds like fun! So glad to have you on board with The Will Street Detective Agency, Rachelle! Thanks a million for your review!
I bought this as a gift for my step-father. It is a lot of fun & well put together. The first box, The Jester, was the one we liked the least as we felt it didn't make as much sense as we would have liked. However, from there they just kept getting better. If I could change anything at all, it would be that the only help group is located on Facebook & the few times we were directed to a phony Facebook profile. Some people do not use Facebook for various reasons & I am one of them. Other than that - this subscription was great fun & well worth the money. I am hoping to get my kids involved when they are a bit older.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review about your experience with us. We are very happy to have you with us at DMS! With each month being a stand-alone mystery, if one month isn't your favorite then maybe the next month will be of more interest. We do our best to provide a nice variety. Some of our cases do include going to Facebook pages but you should be able to access the needed information through your web browser without having a Facebook account. We do have a hint group on Facebook but we also have hint files and solution files on our website for every box. Also, feel free to email us at the email address on...
My fiancé, friends, and I love the Deadbolt Mystery Society boxes! We often get stuck in the chill and sit on our phones routine, and this is something that gets us all working together and actively focused on solving the crime at hand. I like that the boxes have variety, and that each mystery presents new challenges. I also like that this is a great date night at home option, as we have children and cannot easily travel to go to physical escape rooms. These usually take 2-3 hours for us to solve, and for such an experience the price is totally worth it. I have bought many of the bundle packs to beef up our stock in between the monthly shipments and I have no regrets. So glad I stumbled upon this company!
Also, I have to add: this company is family based and they have a Facebook group where you can interact with other “detectives” and the company themselves. It is a very supportive and fun group, and speaks mounds about the pride and passion of the company. Buy this: you won’t regret it!
Welcome Chloe! So glad to have you as part of our mystery family and appreciate all the kind words! We love hearing about friends and family getting in some quality face to face time!
These boxes are a blast. My husband and I really enjoy spending time together and working through the clues. We used this as our date night in time. He thinks of things I don't and I think of things he doesn't so we made a great time. Would totally recommend this to anyone!
You two make a great detective team! Thank you for the recommendation Bobbi! We appreciate it :-)
I wrote a previous 5-star review after doing my first box. I have to give an even more glowing review after having done over half a dozen.
Deadbolt Mystery Society is by far my husband and my favorite boxes (and we open 3-4 different mystery boxes each month). They are challenging and fun providing us lots of laughter and thought. We toss around what methodology is best to solve the case and we use logic to move from one puzzle to the next. It challenges our ability to decipher clues and codes.
I have cancer so going to actual escape rooms has become an impossibility, but these boxes allow me to have even more fun comfortably sitting at home by the computer with my husband. It usually takes us 2-3 hours to complete each one while in an actual escape room you only have one hour. Also, with Deadbolt Mystery boxes we don't have to compete with other people for the hands on experience to solve puzzles.
I would give them a 10 star review if I could. Don't hesitate to try one!
