The reference box
What FairyLoot costs and includes
FairyLoot started in 2016 with a young adult box packed in a London flat. Each month it picks a new fantasy release and turns it into an edition you can only get from FairyLoot: a redesigned cover, sprayed edges, custom endpapers, foil, and sometimes bonus content from the author. US readers order from its US store. The comparison below uses the Adult and Romantasy book-only plans, with the YA plans noted where they differ.
- Plans
- Monthly Young Adult, Adult, and Romantasy boxes, quarterly Epic Fantasy and Cosy Fantasy boxes, and two- and three-book combos. The YA Book + Items box adds four or five themed items to the book.
- Price and billing
- $29 a month for Adult or Romantasy, $25.90 for YA book-only, and $35.90 for YA Book + Items, charged early in the month. Shipping is extra: $7 for a single book to most of the US. Auto-renews, cancel anytime.
- Delivery
- Boxes ship toward the end of the month. The US store delivers to the US and Canada.
- Ages
- YA is aimed at readers 16 and up. Adult, Romantasy, and Epic Fantasy are 18 and up.
- Getting in
- Every plan is full. You join a waitlist for the plan you want, and FairyLoot emails invitations in the order people signed up.
- On Cratejoy
- No. FairyLoot sells at us.fairyloot.com.

The alternatives
A fantasy hardcover every month
SplureBox Fantasy Books Club vs FairyLoot
Best for: The book-only FairyLoot subscriber who mostly wanted a new fantasy on the shelf each month.
SplureBox runs a separate club for each genre, and this one is all magic, mythical creatures, and epic quests. The seller describes its picks as handpicked hardcovers from bestselling authors and names you may not know yet, and says bookish products come along with them.
What feels familiar
A fantasy hardcover chosen for you, on a monthly schedule, with no sign-up queue.
What changes
The listing doesn’t mention special editions, so don’t expect sprayed edges or redesigned covers, and it doesn’t promise new releases.
Closest to FairyLoot’s YA box
OwlCrate YA Fantasy Book & Goodies vs FairyLoot
Best for: The FairyLoot YA Book + Items fan who wants the same unboxing now.
OwlCrate’s YA plan is built the way FairyLoot’s YA Book + Items box is. Each month brings a signed, newly released YA fantasy hardcover in an OwlCrate edition, with design touches such as a redesigned cover, sprayed or stenciled edges, reversible dust jacket art, or foil, plus four or five themed items like pins, mugs, tote bags, or tea.
What feels familiar
An exclusive edition of a new YA fantasy, themed goodies, and a plan you can skip, pause, or cancel.
What changes
With US shipping it comes to about $51 to $53 a month, against roughly $46 to $47 for FairyLoot’s YA Book + Items. OwlCrate’s Adult Fantasy and quarterly Romantasy boxes have waitlists of their own, so the YA plans are the ones open today.
Pick your own special edition
LitJoy To Bee Read vs FairyLoot
Best for: The collector who has opened a FairyLoot box and thought, not that one.
LitJoy’s To Bee Read box comes four times a year, and you choose the book. During a customization week before each box, subscribers pick one of two signed LitJoy editions, drawn from YA and adult fantasy, romance, fairytale, and other genres. The Book Only plan is $22.99 a quarter. The Standard and Deluxe boxes add bookish items.
What feels familiar
A signed special edition made for the shelf, from a company whose shop is full of collector’s box sets.
What changes
Four books a year instead of twelve, and the choice of two isn’t always fantasy. You’re charged when you sign up, and shipping is a separate set fee that depends on the box.
For a teen reader
Owl Post Books YA Imagination Box vs FairyLoot
Best for: A 14- or 15-year-old bookworm who is too young for FairyLoot’s 16-and-up YA box.
Owl Post Books builds its picks from a quiz the reader fills in, and every book is theirs to keep. The Mini sends one hardcover YA book a month in a colorful mailer. The full Box sends three brand-new YA hardcovers.
What feels familiar
New YA hardcovers every month, with shipping included.
What changes
The listing promises YA picks from the quiz, not fantasy every month, and it doesn’t mention special editions. Boxes go by Media Mail, which the seller says takes three to seven days.
Four books a month
A Box of Stories Fantasy Monthly Surprise vs FairyLoot
Best for: The reader who finishes a FairyLoot book in a weekend and spends the rest of the month waiting.
A Box of Stories is a UK seller, like FairyLoot, and this box is fantasy only: four brand-new novels a month, chosen by the seller, and you never get the same book twice.
What feels familiar
Fantasy chosen for you, a surprise every month, and a box that ships from Britain.
What changes
The seller calls its picks lesser-known fantasy, so expect discoveries rather than this month’s most talked-about release, and the listing doesn’t mention special editions.
The honest part
When FairyLoot is still the better fit
Stay on the waitlist if the edition is the point. Of the boxes here, only FairyLoot and OwlCrate turn a new release into a collectible every month, and FairyLoot’s Romantasy plan ships monthly where OwlCrate’s ships quarterly. The waitlist costs nothing to join, and activating an invitation doesn’t charge you, so you can read something else in the meantime.
How we chose these boxes
We started from what FairyLoot sends, a new fantasy release in an exclusive edition, and the reasons a reader might look elsewhere: the waitlist, the price with shipping, wanting to choose, reading faster, or being too young for its YA box. We went through every fantasy, romantasy, and young adult book listing on Cratejoy with a working buy button and kept three. We added OwlCrate and LitJoy because none of the Cratejoy listings we could buy from offer a special-edition fantasy subscription. The photo at the top is FairyLoot’s own image of its boxes.
Questions before switching
Which alternative is closest to FairyLoot?
OwlCrate’s YA Fantasy Book & Goodies box. Each month brings a signed YA fantasy hardcover in an OwlCrate edition with four or five themed items, and it’s open to new subscribers.
How does the FairyLoot waitlist work?
Each plan has its own waitlist. When a spot opens, FairyLoot emails an invitation to the next person in line. Activating the subscription doesn’t charge you. The first payment comes on that plan’s renewal day early in the month.
Is there a romantasy box like FairyLoot’s?
OwlCrate runs a quarterly Romantasy box with exclusive editions for $31.99 plus shipping, but it has a waitlist too. LitJoy’s To Bee Read lets you choose between two signed editions each quarter, and romance is among its genres. If you want romance without the fantasy, SplureBox’s Romance Books Club on Cratejoy sends a hardcover romance each month.
Does FairyLoot ship to the US?
Yes. Its US store at us.fairyloot.com charges in dollars and ships to the US and Canada. A single-book plan costs $7 to ship to most of the US and $16 to Canada.
